All common image formats such as jpg, png, and gif are supported. Outline will also detect retina images and display them at the correct size automatically.

Inserting

You have several options to add images to a document:

• Paste an image from the clipboard with the keyboard or mouse

• Drag and drop an image from your desktop

• Type /image to trigger a file uploader

• In a comment click the photo icon
  

• Select an existing image and choose the “Replace” option in the toolbar

• Type the markdown ![alt](url) (this also allows inserting remote images)

Size & layout

Hover over the edges of an image to see a resize cursor, you can click and drag to resize - the aspect ratio will be automatically retained.

If you need accurate sizing then click to focus the image and then the toolbar will offer inputs to enter specific pixel-based sizing.

Layout options

Outline offers some layout options for images. By default images are inserted centered, however you can choose left or right aligned and full-width.

Icon images

Small images below 32x32px are treated as icons and will automatically display inline with text like the “photo” icon above. Other layout options and captions are not available for these very small images.

Captions

Click to select an image to see the option to “Add a caption”, simply type into this space to add descriptive text for the image. Any added text will also become alt text for the image for accessibility purposes.

Formatting is not supported inside of captions.
